Vitamin D3 Information
Vitamin D3 is not really a vitamin because the body can produce it, though it is actually a type of steroid hormone made in the skin from cholesterol when the skin is in direct sunlight. It is essentially inactive until it is converted in the liver and kidneys, then it helps with calcium absorption from the intestines. At that point, it also acts in the kidneys to prevent excessive urinary calcium losses, and helps in the incorporation of calcium into the bone. Vitamin D3 is produced naturally in your skin, but it is also found in oily fish. Exposing your skin to sunlight for about 20 minutes several times a week will help produce natural Vitamin D3, but always remember to use a sun screen so you do not burn. Lack of direct sunlight can cause abnormal bone function.

Vitamin D3 Uses
Taking Vitamin D3 supplements helps the kidneys to filter blood properly. It helps maintain bone density and strengthens the immune system. Scientific research has found that Vitamin D3 helps prevent multiple sclerosis and retard the progression of it as well. Vitamin D3 supplementation is also used to treat rickets in young children, and osteoporosis in post menopausal women and the elderly who are often at risk to fractures due to loss of bone density. This vitamin is vital for the utilization of calcium and phosphorus, and for the absorption of vitamin A.

Vitamin D3 Dosage Information
Vitamin D3 can be taken as a single supplement, and it is also an ingredient in other product formulations. It is important to read and follow product label directions for use, although, anyone taking more than 1300 IU's per day should have periodic blood tests performed to be sure that not too much calcium is being absorbed or that kidney and liver function is not adversely affected. If you need to take high amounts of Vitamin D3, it should be done under the supervision of your physician.

Vitamin D3 Safety
In adults, a Vitamin D deficiency can cause softening of the bones known as osteomalacia. Vitamin D deficiency in any age causes abnormal bone formation. Strict vegetarians, dark-skinned people, alcoholics and those with liver or kidney disease are more susceptible to Vitamin D deficiency. Sometimes people who have had intestinal surgeries, or have celiac disease, pancreatitis, or cystic fibrosis can experience a Vitamin D deficiency as well.
